12/20/2025: The Lilab team embarked on a rejuvenating and immersive team-building journey to Kota Kinabalu (亚庇), the vibrant capital of Sabah, Malaysia (马来西亚・沙巴). This five-day retreat masterfully blended awe-inspiring natural encounters with rich cultural experiences, fostering deeper bonds and creating unforgettable shared memories under the Borneo sun.
Day 1: Serene Arrival and Golden Horizons
The adventure began with the team's arrival on December 14th. After checking in, they headed straight to the historic Kota Kinabalu Cafe (哥打京那巴鲁咖啡馆) to sample authentic laksa (叻沙) , immersing themselves in the local flavors. Following the meal, they explored the lively morning market (早市) , taking in the bustling atmosphere and local produce. Then, the first stop was the stunning Floating Mosque (水上清真寺) , its magnificent structure perfectly mirrored in the lagoon, instilling a sense of peace. A leisurely citywalk through bustling local markets followed, filled with the enticing aromas of street food. The day culminated at Tanjung Aru Beach (丹绒亚路海滩) for a breathtaking sunset. As the sky melted into hues of orange and purple, the team shared a moment of collective awe, warmly welcomed by Sabah's golden hour.
Day 2: Island Paradise and Underwater Wonders
Day two was dedicated to island hopping (跳岛游) to the pristine Mantanani Island (环滩岛) . The excitement built during the speedboat ride across the sparkling sea. The journey was enlivened by the crew's infectious singing, which got some team members joining in, though a few others felt a bit seasick from the choppy waves. The main activity, snorkeling (浮潜) , revealed a vibrant underwater world. Swimming alongside colorful schools of fish, the team was filled with childlike wonder and exhilaration, their laughter echoing above the crystal-clear waters. In the evening, the team sought out Ang Restaurant (洪金买饭店) for a taste of local Bak Kut Teh (肉骨茶) . However, the experience was underwhelming, as the dish turned out to be rather average.
Day 3: Cultural Immersion and Magical Nightlights
The focus shifted to heritage on day three at the Mari-Mari Cultural Village (马里马里文化村) . Here, the team immersed themselves in the rich traditions of Sabah's diverse ethnic groups, including the Kadazan-Dusun (卡达山-杜顺族), Lundayeh (伦达耶族), Murut (慕鲁族), Bajau (巴夭族), and Rungus (龙古斯族) . The team actively participated in traditional activities, from fire-starting to blowpipe shooting (吹箭) and even getting temporary tribal tattoos (纹身). They also enjoyed sampling local delicacies and joined in lively cultural dances, sparking curiosity and joyous interaction as they experienced the unique customs of each group. As evening approached, the team gathered on a nearby beach for a bonfire (篝火) , where they sang and danced under the twilight sky, adding a festive touch to the night. Then, a cruise through the Kawa Kawa Mangrove Forest (红树林) offered tranquility. The true highlight came after dark: thousands of fireflies (萤火虫) transformed the trees into a twinkling fairyland, leaving the team in spellbound silence under the starry sky.
Day 4: Twin Island Adventure and Coastal Thrills
Another day of exploration took the team to the popular twin islands of Sapi Island (沙比岛) and Manukan Island (马努干岛) . The mood was energetic and playful. Some sought adrenaline through parasailing (拖曳伞) , soaring high with exhilarating shouts, while others enjoyed swimming and sunbathing on the soft white sands. The easy access between islands made for a day full of shared fun and relaxation. As night fell, the team headed to a local seafood market (海鲜市场) to feast on fresh catches, savoring the flavors of the sea and reflecting on the day's adventures.
Day 5: Highland Majesty and a Tranquil Finale
The final day presented a dramatic change of scenery. A visit to the Desa Cattle Dairy Farm (奶牛牧场) in the foothills of Mount Kinabalu offered a taste of alpine freshness, with cool air and rolling green pastures. Following the farm visit, they stopped at Gerai Pekan Nabalu (拿巴鲁集市) , a local market offering handicrafts and snacks, adding a cultural touch to the highland experience. The journey then continued with an inspiring hike in the Kinabalu National Park (神山公园) . Walking through the ancient, mossy forest, the team felt a profound sense of peace and accomplishment. After the hike, they explored the nearby Botanical Garden (植物园) , admiring the diverse flora of Borneo, a perfect end to their adventure surrounded by the majesty of nature.
A Journey of Shared Discovery
This expedition to Kota Kinabalu was more than a retreat; it was a collective narrative of discovery. From the serene waters of the mosque to the glittering mangrove nights, and from vibrant coral reefs to misty mountain trails, every experience strengthened the team's unity. Lilab returns reinvigorated, bound together like a family, carrying with them the shared spirit of adventure and a renewed commitment to collaboration.
